E-Bikes, E-Scooters, and Safety: How to Enjoy the Ride Without an ER Visit

With sunny weather across Central Indiana, our local trails—from the Monon Greenway stretching through Carmel, Westfield, and Fishers to the village paths in Zionsville and cultural trails in Indianapolis—are buzzing with activity.
Among the strollers and joggers, electric bikes and e-scooters have quickly become the preferred mode of summer transportation. They offer a fun, eco-friendly way for teenagers, commuters, and families to get around town.
However, local emergency rooms, first responders, and city councils across Hamilton and Marion counties are reporting a troubling trend: a sharp increase in serious crashes, head injuries, and pedestrian collisions involving motorized micromobility devices.
Why the Spike in Accidents?
Electric bikes and scooters are far more powerful than traditional bicycles. While standard bikes rely solely on pedal power, e-bikes and e-scooters can easily maintain speeds between 20 mph to over 30 mph with minimal effort.
When high speed meets busy multi-use paths, several key risk factors emerge:
Speed Disparity on Trails: A runner or young child walks at roughly 3 to 5 mph. An e-bike traveling at 20 mph closes distance in seconds, leaving very little reaction time for either party.
The "E-Moto" Confusion: Many teenagers are operating high-powered electric dirt bikes (e-motos) that exceed 30–40 mph. These are classified as motorized vehicles, yet they are frequently operated on pedestrian paths without adequate protective gear.
Lack of Protective Equipment: While motorcycle riders routinely wear full pads and helmets, e-bike riders often ride without helmets, making them far more vulnerable in a high-speed fall.
Distracted & Multiple Riding: Doubling up on single-rider scooters or riding while holding a smartphone significantly alters the device’s center of gravity and braking distance.
Common Injuries Seen in Emergency Departments
In primary care and urgent care settings, we often evaluate the fallout from these crashes. While minor scrapes are common, high-speed micromobility falls frequently cause more complex injuries:
Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs) & Concussions: The single most severe risk of riding without a helmet, often occurring when a rider is thrown over the handlebars.
Upper Extremity Fractures: Broken wrists, clavicles (collarbones), and elbows caused by natural "FOOSH" injuries (falling on an outstretched hand).
Facial Lacerations & Dental Trauma: Common in e-scooter handle-bar flips.
Lower Extremity Trauma: Ankle sprains, knee ligament tears, and leg fractures from side impacts or sudden stops.
5 Essential Safety Tips for Riders and Families
Enjoying e-bikes safely comes down to preparation, understanding local regulations, and exercising spatial awareness on shared paths.
1. Helmets Are Non-Negotiable
A properly fitted, CPSC-certified helmet reduces the risk of severe head injury by up to 85%. Make helmet-wearing a mandatory rule for everyone in your household, regardless of age or distance.
2. Know Your Trail Rules and Class Limits
Class 1 & 2 E-Bikes: Motor-assisted up to 20 mph; generally permitted on most local greenways.
Class 3 & E-Motos: Devices that reach speeds above 20–28+ mph are generally banned on municipal trails and pedestrian sidewalks.
Observe Speed Limits: Stick to posted trail speed limits (typically 15–20 mph) and slow down significantly when approaching pedestrians, pets, or intersections.
3. Practice Defensive Trail Etiquette
Audible Warnings: Always give a clear verbal warning ("On your left!") or ring a bell well before passing pedestrians.
Ditch the Headphones: Keep your ears clear to listen for surrounding traffic, emergency vehicles, and other trail users.
One Rider Per Device: Never carry passengers on e-scooters or single-seat e-bikes.
4. Inspect the Device Regularly
E-bikes carry more weight and travel faster than regular bikes, causing quicker wear on brakes and tires. Perform routine checks on brake responsiveness, tire pressure, and battery connections before every ride.
5. Inspect Intersections
Crosswalks and driveway cutouts are high-risk zones. Drivers turning right or pulling out often do not anticipate a bike approaching at 20 mph. Always slow down, make direct eye contact with drivers, and yield when crossing busy roadways.
